Ed Sheeran ha estat el guanyador del MTV VMA al millor artista de l’any, superant a Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande o Kendrick Lamar, que sí que ha aconseguit el premi al millor vídeo de l’any, gràcies a Humble.
La millor cançó pop ha estat Down de les Fifth Harmony, mentre que la millor col·laboració ha estat la de Zayn i Taylor Swift amb I don’t wanna live forever. En l’apartat de dance, Zedd i Alessia Cara han vençut amb Stay, Twenty One Pilots a l’apartat de rock i el millor debut ha estat el de Khalid.
L’edició 33 va estar presentada per Katy Perry, que a més també va actuar, al costat d’altres artistes com Miley Cyrus, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Lorde o Pink entre altres.
Taylor Swift ha estrenat en directe el seu nou videoclip, mentre que Ed Sheeran ha cantat el seu èxit Shape of you.
Lorde també ha actuat i s’ha vist obligada a fer playback, ja que estava amb un procés gripal, però ni així ha cancel·lat la seva participació en la gala.
